A tough day in the office for KL Saracens Storm in their 2nd Liga KRS Diamond 2 match of the season!
We knew the season, up a division from last year, would challenge the squad, but took it on and training has been focused on preparing a game plan and the basics to enable us to put in solid performances against some strong teams.
We also set guidelines and expectations – If these aren’t met, the challenge we face becomes harder still!
Match day didn’t start very well with some late arrivals and no shows which meant we were forced in to some unplanned last minute positional changes and the warm-up was disrupted.
The first half saw us under a lot of pressure at the set piece against an experienced and heavy weight pack, but despite that we defended well and soaked up most of the pressure generated through Ex Angels possession and territory dominance.
Ex Angels went in to the half time break only up by three points at 0-3.
The second half started a little brighter for Storm, but we failed to convert when when we got in to the scoring zone and could not get any continuity with attack turned into scrambling defence after perhaps trying to force things too much and making some key errors.
The game remained tight at 0-3 until the last 15 minutes when Ex Angels were able to run away with the match following a couple of key injury substitutions – this is where we suffered due to a weakened bench. Final Score 0-29.
Despite being on the back foot at scrum time for the majority of the match, Charlie Tan at 9 put in a great effort cleaning up a lot of scrappy ball. That and his constant chat and positivity made him our man of the match, backed up by solid performances from Andy Turner in defence and our back row who worked tirelessly and had to deal with an “unusual” interpretation of the breakdown. In future, we’ll need to adapt to how the officials are refereeing and manage that, but in this case the real positive was that we remained disciplined and did not make the situation worse.
Looking forward, let’s take the positives from this match into training on Tuesday and then enjoy the weekend off, before hitting training hard the following week in preparation for match day 3 against KPD Tigers.
It’s a home match at Baker Hughes Arena @ Padang Varsiti UM, so no excuses for late arrivals!
