After a solid start to the season last week, we knew that the 1st XV were going to be in for a tougher game this week. With a long list of injuries and absentees (all forwards), the pack was looking slightly different and a lot lighter than last week.
The game started well for Saracens with a sustained period of pressure. Unfortunately we had a tendency to force the last pass, leading to us squandering a few chances early on. This was followed by our first yellow card of the season, for what was a very, very late tackle. Our defence held up well and once we returned to a full compliment of players, the first try of the game came for Alex Hodson. At half time the score was 5-0.
In the 2nd half it was obvious that the opposition were starting to struggle in the heat, but they kept up a solid work rate through until the final whistle. A couple of mistakes at the breakdown led to 2 penalties for SDAR Lions, the second converted as the last act of the match. These were countered with 3 more tries for us, 2 from Conor Cheng and another for Alex Hodson. Final score 20-6.
We showed more composure in the 2nd half and the scores reflected this. Overall another good performance from Saracens but we still felt we left a few scores on the park. Our game management was not up to the standards of the week before, but with all the changes in the pack it was another good result.
After the game we were joined by SDAR Lions at our club house, Out of Africa, for food and drink – Another good evening followed.
