Asian Junior Rugby 10s – 21st-22nd November 2015
KL Saracens Under 14 and Under 16 traveled to Manila over the weekend of 21st and 22nd November to compete in the Asian Junior Rugby 10s, hosted by the Alabang Eagles.
The U16 team were returning to defend the title and the U14 team were competing in the tournament for the first time.
The weekend saw some great rugby played by both sides and culminated in both age groups making their respective Cup finals on the Sunday afternoon. The U14 boys faced hosts Alabang Eagles in their final and had to fight their way back into the game after going down to an early breakaway try from the Eagles. The KLS boys kept their composure, worked the ball through the forwards for Danish Haiqal to finish off a series of pick-and-gos with an equalising score. The game remained tight, but was settled by an inspired kick-chase try, Umar Harith chasing a perfectly weighted 35m kick from Coby Baker to dot down for the winning score – KL Saracens coming out 12-5 winners to finally win their first tournament of 2015!.
The U16 team had an equally impressive run-in to the Cup final, beating local team Clark Jets 20-5 in the semi-final to set up a re-match with Hong Kong Tigers to whom they had narrowly lost 0-5 in the pool stage on day 1. The final proved to be an equally closely contested affair, with scores tied 5-5 at half-time, but a yellow card for KLS tipped the scales in favour of the Hong Kong team who took full advantage of the extra man to come out winners by 22-10.
The tour was a great experience for both teams who were brilliantly hosted by Alabang Eagles throughout and to whom the club’s deep appreciation is extended. Both squads conducted themselves superbly both on and off the pitch and were great ambassadors for KL Saracens. Thanks go to the coaches, tour managers and travelling support who all ensured the success of the tour.
More detailed tour reports to follow from the players.
