KL Saracens 1st XV squeaked past COBRA at Padang Utara, Petaling Jaya on Saturday 14th April 2018 with a narrow 27-25 victory in the semi-final stage of the Liga KRS Diamond 1 competition. COBRA had raced ahead to a 15-0 lead early in the first half by virtue of a penalty and two tries, one converted, before KLS managed to at least gain a foothold in the game answering with an unconverted try of their own. COBRA were, however, still in their stride and chalked up another unconverted try after 25 minutes to take the lead out to 20-5. This was something of a watershed in the match, after which Saracens started to play with a much better shape and air of purpose, putting COBRA under sustained pressure before clawing another try back just before half time to go into the break 10-20 down.
KL Saracens look to move the ball quickly from a breakdown
The Saracens pressure continued after half-time, a combination of controlled phase play and a well-managed offload game creating two more tries for Saracens to level the scores at 20-20. COBRA then made the most of a series of uncharacteristic missed tackles by the Saracens defence to grab another try for themselves against the run of play, regaining the lead 25-20, answered very swiftly by a forward dominated score under the posts by Josh Johns to put Saracens into the lead for the first time at 27-25 with ten minutes to go. With the game still anybody’s, both teams raised the tempo in the hope of getting a decisive score but, even with the second half running to 50 minutes with what seemed like an eternity of injury time played, neither team could add to the tally and KL Saracens rolled out winners on the day. Thanks go to COBRA for a great game and for their hospitality at their clubhouse after the game.
The 1st XV now move on to the Cup Final vs KL Tigers on Sunday 29th April at 17:00, at Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor (SMSS). Best wishes to the team for what is bound to be a cracking final!
